Are the new Tesla self-driving robotaxis in Dallas, Texas, safe to ride in?

Tesla just rolled out its robotaxis in Dallas and Houston, marking further expansion of its newest service in the U.S. Tesla posted two videos showing its best-selling Model Y running in the two cities with no human driver or monitor in the front seats. These futuristic cars have us ask the questions “How safe are these self-driving cars?” and “Should I own a self-driving car?” You would definitely need to install an EV charger and photovoltaic panels if you wanted to.

Where are Tesla robotaxis currently deployed in Dallas?

In Dallas, you can find unsupervised robotaxis around Highland Park, in the center of the city. According to a third-party robotaxi tracker, Tesla’s footprint in Dallas is just 31 square miles, and 25 square miles in Houston, with a single Model Y available in each town.

The Tesla robotaxis have been performing very well, with no fatal accidents and just 13 accidents since June 2025, in Austin Texas. Tesla reports that the taxis have driven 529,920 miles without an incident in Austin, TX. While Waymo reports over 1,000,000 miles per incident, setting the industry benchmark for autonomous vehicle safety.

Compared to human drivers, who average 500,000 miles between police-reported crashes. Most cybertaxis are already much safer than human driving, which is the main goal of the automation functionality.

What if you wish to own your own self-driving car?

Contrary to the Waymo robotaxis that use LiDAR and radar technology, Tesla is adhering to the “vision-only” philosophy, relying on 8-9 cameras to provide a 360-degree view, the same as a normal electric car with self-driving functions. This means that any Tesla Model Y would have the same functions as a robotaxi, making it safer to use in self-driving mode than in manual mode.
